Accepts the Toughest Cases

NMS Labs has a reputation for solving active and cold cases both in the US and abroad. We also have the capabilities to identify unidentified human remains. The Forensic Biology Unit manages cases while maintaining a strict chain of custody and confidentiality. Our methods locate and isolate difficult samples, with high success of creating forensically defensible DNA profiles that most other labs often cannot find.

Case Studies

Human remains found in September confirmed as those of missing Venango County man. The remains recovered were analyzed by NMS Labs using a DNA sample from one of the parents, finding a 99.99993 percent match.

  • A woman was found raped and murdered inside her apartment.
  • Her husband was the investigator's only suspect; however, a sound alibi and lack of evidence were not enough for an arrest. The case ran cold for more than 10 years.
  • Years later, a DNA profile in CODIS from a separate rape case found a possible suspect. When investigators found that this new suspect had personal ties to both the victim and her husband, the case was re-opened.

  • Using Y-STR testing, NMS Labs identified two male profiles on a towel that was next to the victim's body: her husband and the new suspect.
  • In addition, a stray hair from evidence at the murder scene was a match to the new suspect.

  • 13 years after the murder, the new suspect was convicted for the rape and murder as a result of the DNA evidence from the scene.

  • A major hurricane flooded a small town. Grave sites at the local cemetery were disturbed and remains were found floating.
  • After 2 years, only half of the remains were identified and returned to rest. Those unidentified human remains left were sent to NMS Labs for DNA identification.

  • Bones from the remains and samples from family members were sent to the labs for comparison.

  • More than half of the unidentified remains have been returned to their graves.
